The word screed is used for different products in flooring, from deeper floor layers to thinner smoothing materials; the exact product description establishes its role. You may see bagged compounds with their own mixing system and stated uses for particular types of base.

A smooth base beneath your floor

A thin floor covering can reveal uneven detail beneath it, while a board floor has its own requirements for the flatness of the base; a suitable smoothing layer helps form the surface that the chosen finish needs.

The required depth differs between a small local change in level and a broader area of uneven floor. Each compound has limits for the thickness at which it can be used. Those limits are part of the product design, so a deeper application is not always a better use of the same material.
