A doorway is where a new floor either looks professionally finished or gives the game away. A poorly chosen or badly fitted door bar can pinch a floating floor, leave a sharp exposed edge or sit proud enough to catch socks and slippers. Knowing how to install door bars properly means matching the profile to the two floor finishes, allowing for movement where needed and fixing it firmly to the right surface.
Door bars, also called threshold strips, do more than cover a join. They protect vulnerable cut edges, manage height changes between rooms and create a clean stopping point where different finishes meet. The right fitting method depends on what is under the bar, not just what it looks like from above.
Choose the right door bar before cutting
Start by checking the doorway from room to room. Measure the opening at its narrowest point, usually between the architraves, and note whether the door closes over the finished floor without rubbing. It is also worth checking where the door sits when shut. Ideally, the join between two floors should fall beneath the closed door, so neither finish is visible from the other room.
The profile matters. A flat cover strip suits two floor finishes that meet at a similar height. A ramped door bar is better where one side is higher, such as a thicker engineered wood board meeting sheet vinyl. A single-edge trim finishes one exposed edge, often at a hearth, step or change in floor level. Carpet door bars use a different design again, gripping and tucking the carpet edge rather than simply covering a gap.
For click LVT, laminate and engineered wood installed as floating floors, select a profile that covers the expansion gap without fastening the flooring itself. These floors need room to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. Fixing a bar through the planks can restrict that movement and may cause lifting, gapping or joint damage later.
A doorway between two rooms with the same floating floor may still need an expansion break. This depends on the product instructions, the continuous floor area and the shape of the layout. Long runs, doorways and changes in room temperature are common places where a manufacturer requires a transition profile. Always follow the fitting guidance supplied with the specific floor.
Tools and materials for fitting a door bar
Most installations need a tape measure, pencil, hacksaw or fine-tooth mitre saw, drill, suitable drill bits, screwdriver and safety glasses. Keep a vacuum or brush close by too. Grit trapped beneath the profile can stop it sitting level.
You will also need the door bar and its correct fixings. Many metal profiles are supplied with screws and plugs, while some clip-down systems have a base track and separate top section. Adhesive-backed strips and construction adhesive can work in selected situations, but they are not an automatic substitute for screws. A bar in a busy hall or between rooms with a noticeable level change usually benefits from a mechanical fixing into a sound subfloor.
Check the subfloor material before choosing screws. Timber floorboards need wood screws long enough to gain a secure hold without risking pipes or cables below. Concrete needs masonry plugs and screws. If you have underfloor heating, do not drill until you know exactly where pipes or electric elements run. In that case, a manufacturer-approved adhesive system may be the safer route.
How to install door bars step by step
Fit the flooring fully up to the doorway first, leaving the correct perimeter or expansion allowance. Do not use the door bar to hide an excessively large gap. Most profiles only cover a limited width, and a wide void can leave the floor edge unsupported.
1. Mark the bar to the doorway width
Hold the door bar in position and mark it to fit between the architraves. Take your time here. A profile that is even a few millimetres too long can bow, while one cut too short leaves an untidy gap at the side.
Remove the bar and cut it with a fine-tooth saw. Aluminium and brass profiles cut cleanly with a hacksaw, using steady pressure rather than forcing the blade. File off any sharp burrs before test-fitting it. If the doorway is not perfectly square, use the actual opening as your guide rather than relying on a measurement taken elsewhere.
2. Position it over the join
Place the cut bar over the floor join and check that it gives equal, adequate coverage on both sides. For a floating floor, make sure the edge can still move freely beneath the profile. The bar should bridge the gap, not clamp the boards down.
Look along the profile from the side. It should sit flat without rocking and should not create a sudden trip edge. If one floor is higher, use a ramp profile rather than packing out a flat strip with offcuts or adhesive. Packing rarely stays stable and can make the finished doorway feel uneven.
3. Mark fixing points accurately
With the bar in its final position, mark each fixing hole onto the subfloor. Move the profile away before drilling. This avoids scratching the surface and gives you a cleaner, more accurate hole.
For concrete, drill to the depth required for the plug, clear out the dust and tap the plugs in flush. For timber, make a small pilot hole first, particularly near the edge of a board, to reduce the chance of splitting. Never assume the centre of a doorway is free from services. Investigate before drilling, especially in newer homes and refurbished properties.
4. Secure the profile without over-tightening
Set the door bar back in place and insert the screws. Tighten each one gradually, alternating between fixings so the profile settles evenly. Stop as soon as it is secure. Over-tightening can distort a lightweight metal bar, strip a timber fixing or pull the profile down hard onto a floating floor.
If you are fitting a two-part or clip-down profile, screw or adhere the base channel first. Keep it central over the expansion gap, then press or tap the top section into place using a rubber mallet and a protective offcut. Do not strike the visible face directly with a hammer.
5. Test the doorway and finish the edges
Open and close the door several times. It should clear the bar and the finished floor without scraping. If it catches, do not leave it in the hope that the floor will settle. The door may need planing, rehanging or adjusting before the room is put back into use.
Finally, vacuum the area and check for loose screws, raised corners or sharp cut ends. A correctly fitted bar should feel secure underfoot and look intentional, rather than like an afterthought.
When adhesive is the better option
Adhesive fitting can be sensible where drilling is risky or impractical, such as over certain heated screeds, tiled thresholds or waterproofed bathroom floors. Use an adhesive suitable for both the profile and the subfloor, and only on clean, dry, sound surfaces. Dust, polish, old adhesive residue and loose paint can all weaken the bond.
There is a trade-off. Adhesive can avoid drilling, but it makes future access and replacement harder. It also needs curing time, so keep foot traffic off the threshold for as long as the adhesive instructions state. For high-traffic areas, a screw-fixed profile is often the more dependable choice when the subfloor allows it.
Common fitting mistakes to avoid
The most frequent error is screwing through laminate, click LVT or a floating wood floor. The floor needs its expansion space, including at doorways. Secure the profile to the subfloor or use the system designed for that floor, not the planks themselves.
Another is choosing a bar based only on colour. A close finish is useful, but profile shape and height are more important for a safe, durable result. A silver aluminium ramp can be less visually subtle than a matching wood-effect strip, yet it may be the correct answer where there is a significant level change.
Avoid fitting a door bar across a fire door threshold if it interferes with the door closing properly or compromises its required clearance. In flats, communal areas and commercial settings, threshold details may also need to meet accessibility and fire-safety requirements. When in doubt, check the building specification or speak to a qualified installer.
A neat threshold is worth the extra ten minutes
Door bars are small pieces of hardware, but they deal with some of the hardest-working parts of a floor. Measure carefully, allow a floating floor to move and select a profile that suits the height difference rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all solution.
